Linus guest uses over 90% cpu all the time

I installed a vdi of CentOS on my eComStation host. The host cpu never calms down although the guest has no programs running. The host cpu graph looks like the serrated edge of a knife, quickly jumping from 95% to 100% every couple of seconds.

On the guest, the System Monitor shows 0 to 2% cpu, and that is only due to the system Monitor process: "gnome-system-monitor".

Any idea what can I do to fix this?
