story behind the 08:00:27 OUI used on all Virtualbox network adapters

Post by ssybesma »

I've been trying to find the answer to this and after some research I hit a dead end.

All virtual network adapters in Virtualbox are automatically given a MAC address that starts with 08:00:27

I looked that up and it was assigned to Cadmus Computer Systems (a daughter company founded by German company PCS in 1985), but they went out of business in the 1990s and sold assets to DEC I believe. From there not sure what happened.

Does anyone know how Oracle came into the picture as far as being able to use that OUI?

Would be an interesting story since that range still doesn't appear as being registered to Oracle.

Just curious.

Try googing Cadmus Computer Systems. Several Virtualbox-related links come up that relate to this question. It has been asked before, in fact, a decade ago.
