vboxmanage guestcontrol run zero output

Post by greyspike »

hi,

Eventually I'm trying to submit commands to DB2 running within a guest, but at the moment I can't get vboxmanage guestcontrol run to return any output for any command.

I've read the built-in help and searched the forum and the general web, but I'm missing something somewhere.

Yes I could use plink or ssh, but then I need to know the IP, which is dynamic, rather than just the VM name, which is fixed.

Host is Windows 10. Virtualbox 5.2.12r122591 (Qt5.6.2) with ExtPack (Added ExtPack to see if it made any difference but no). NAT network.
Guest is Ubuntu 18 (more info below). Guest Additions is installed and up to date.

This is where I have got to so far:

Code: Select all

vboxmanage guestcontrol DB2 --verbose --username db2inst1 --password db2 run --timeout 10000 --no-wait-stderr --wait-stdout --exe "/bin/ip" -- "-h -4 -br a"
and the output is

Code: Select all

Creating guest session as user 'db2inst1'...
Waiting for guest session to start...
Successfully started guest session (ID 3)
Starting guest process (within 10000ms)
Process '/bin/ip' (PID 2545) started
Process terminated
Exit code=255 (Status=500 [successfully terminated])
Closing guest session ...
I don't know whether this is relevant, but without the --timeout, vboxmanage waits forever and I need to kill it from Task Manager.

The VM logs have no entries for attempts which successfully start a guest process, only for those that fail e.g. bad password.

I've tried multiple commands in /bin but no luck.

Any help gratefully received as this is driving me nuts.
