[Solved] RHEL guest - network unreachable

Post by adamthekiwi »

Hi folks,

I'm using VirtualBox on Ubuntu 16.04 (VBox version is 5.1.34_Ubuntu r121010 - the the current version available using apt-get) and trying to get a RHEL guest working (to set up as a vagrant box).

I've installed the OS from iso and I've set it up with bridged networking on a PC-Net FAST III adapter. I've also set up an Ubuntu server guest with all the same settings. Ubuntu works fine, RHEL has no network - 'ip a' shows no IP address. Can anyone assist?

VBoxManage showvminfo shows:

It looks like you're using the distro's fork version of VirtualBox. You can either ask in their forums for help, or completely remove/uninstall/delete/purge their version and install the official version from the Downloads section of VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).

That's not the default, is it? Change it back to the defaults.

OK. Upgraded to 5.2.8 r121009 (Qt5.6.1)

Changed interface back to "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)" - this is the default. NIC 1 definition for RHEL now reads:

Code: Select all

NIC 1: MAC: 0800276A76AF, Attachment: Bridged Interface 'wlp4s0', Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: 82540EM, Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny, Bandwidth group: none
Ubuntu:

Code: Select all

NIC 1: MAC: 080027617C55, Attachment: Bridged Interface 'wlp4s0', Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: 82540EM, Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny, Bandwidth group: none
On RHEL guest, 'ip a' shows no inet line, no inet6 line. Ubuntu guest works as expected, with a sensible DHCP IP.

I must be missing something obvious.

Adam.

Can you post the output of running the following two commands on RHEL guest:
dmesg | grep -i e1000
dhclient -v
-Andy.
My crystal ball is currently broken. If you want assistance you are going to have to give me all of the necessary information.
Please don't ask me to do your homework for you, I have more than enough of my own things to do.

Hey folks,

I was being an idiot - trying to work while too tired. At the installation stage, I'd not enabled networking.

Just goes to show, sleep is a critical part of any work with computers...!

Thanks for reporting back - and being honest :) - I'll mark the topic as solved.

I'm particularly impressed because the typical pattern around here is (a) discover own embarrassing goof, (b) desperately look for a weak face saving rationale to continue blaming the software. :)
