No Driver Base system device and cannot see USB Key

Post by daniellouwrens »

Hi

I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32 in a VB 5.1.4 program, sorry I do not know the correct terminology,
on a W10 Pro x64 PC.

I have two problems on the Vista install and I do not know if they are connected.

1) In device Manager it shows a yellow exclamation mark against Other Devices/"Base System Device
and in Properties there is a message to install the driver.

2) Under USB Controllers it shows yellow exclamation mark against "ÜSB Mass Storage Device"

In Windows Explorer no USB drive is seen.

In VB I have selected the USB Key under devices.

Can someone please let me know where to start to fix this.

Thanks

Daniel

If your device is a USB3 device, it won't be seen by Vista, since it does not support USB3. You need to plug it to a USB2 hub to force your device to downgrade to USB2.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

Hi

Thank you for your advice, you are correct, the USB is plugged into
a USB3 input, I will use a USB2 input and I'm sure it will work.

BTW I cannot get to the PC until tomorrow at the earliest but will let you know how it went
as soon as I can.

Thanks again

Hi

I plugged the USB into a USB 2 port and I still have the same problem.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Cheers

With the USB device plugged in and the VM not running, post the output of the following commands:
  •
    cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\"
    VBoxManage list usbhost
    VBoxManage list usbfilters
    VBoxManage list extpacks
    VBoxManage showvminfo "Your_Virtual_Machine_Name"

Hi

at the C:\windows\system32>
I entered

cd "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\" but the result was
The system cannot find the path specified

Then I figured that the VB program was installed on the D: drive
so I entered

cd "D:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\"
the result was
C:\windows\system32>

I entered
VBoxManage list usbhost
the result was
'VBoxManage' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I pressed enter got to
C:\windows\system32>
and got the same result for the rest of the commands

I am doing something wrong but do not know what.

Cheers

And you're sitting in front of your computer! Imagine us!!! ;)

Find where VirtualBox.exe is located, I can't do it for you. Then switch to that directory with the "cd" command. If the location is on a different drive (like in your case), you first have to change to that drive by issuing (in your case):
  • D:
    cd "D:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\"
You could have searched for that BTW, there should be plenty of results/tutorials out there...

Hi

I did google the problem and had changed to the D: drive but I missed the bit
about changing to D: in the command box.

Thanks for your help, here is the result.

You don't have the Ext. Pack installed.

Follow the steps below. Exactly. Not everything might apply to you. If there is a failure, please state exactly which step failed:
  1. Make sure that the Extension Pack is installed on the host. The same version as VirtualBox.
  2. Make sure that USB2 (EHCI) is enabled in your VM settings.
  3. Under VM Settings » Port » USB, create a USB filter in your guest settings while the device is plugged in the host. Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID.
  4. Unplug the device.
  5. Start your guest (the one that you applied the filter to). Let it start completely. Log in if you have to.
  6. Plug your device. The filter should capture it and pass control to your guest. You might get a "New hardware found" wizard on the guest, that's normal.

Hi

I installed the Extension Pack,
enabled USB2 (EHCI) in VM Settings.

There was no Port » USB under VM Settings
there was only Serial Port >> Serial Port so
I did not create a filter, (I dont know how) I shut down the VM
then unplugged the USB key, started the VM and the Guest
then plugged in the USB key again and it was recognised
and a driver loaded.

I was able to do what I wanted.

Thanks for your help.

For better integration between VM and Host one should install the "guest additions". That solved the base system device issue for me on my Win 2016 server VM. In the Window containing the running virtual machine, select Guest Additions from the Devices menu. Then run autoplay on the ISO that mounts.

For more details look in chapter 4 of the virtualbox manual.

Hi

I don't have access to that machine at the moment but I will get back to it sometime
in the future and will let you know how it goes.
