How to change cpu revision, stepping and caption for the guest?

This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

How to change cpu revision, stepping and caption for the guest?

How to change cpu revision, stepping and caption in oracle virtualbox?

I've read the article about how to change the CPU name in the internet:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000002/eax 0x65746e49
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000002/ebx 0x2952286c
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000002/ecx 0x726f4320
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000002/edx 0x4d542865
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000003/eax 0x43203229
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000003/ebx 0x20205550
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000003/ecx 0x20202020
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000003/edx 0x20202020
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000004/eax 0x30303636
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000004/ebx 0x20402020
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000004/ecx 0x30342e32
vboxmanage setextradata %vm% VBoxInternal/CPUM/HostCPUID/80000004/edx 0x007a4847

It changes the Name of the CPU, and how I can change the info about stepping and revision?

The literature says this info must be written into EAX=1
I can get CPUID information from Oracle vm logs, I have plenty of them, there is a nice table there, but how can I convert it into proper commands for setextradata to proess it to the guest where I want to use it?
I know it's simple for a man who understands how to write it to EAX=1, please advise

What's that article? And more important, what are you trying to do? And why?

Hi, I'm trying to make my virtual machine look like running old processor, because some old stupid installers don't want to work when they detect unknown cpu that was produced much later.

Here is the topic I've read
http://superuser.com/questions/625648/v ... -the-guest

Intel's guide for their processors is also attached there
https://software.intel.com/sites/defaul ... /2/3/41604

How to get values like 0x65746e49 using virtual machine log (CPUID section) or how to find these values for "revision, caption, etc" parameters for needed processor? (old core duo is ok)

Thanks
Hitech

How old of a processor are we talking about? There are several things that might be easier, like use one of the following existing EXPERIMENTAL templates that change the CPU presented to the VM:

    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Xeon X5482 3.20GHz"
    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-2635QM"
    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-3960X"
    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i5-3570"
    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-5600U"
    VBoxManage modifyvm "<VM name>" --cpu-profile "Intel Core i7-6700K"
Try it with the VM shutdown. If you have any more specific needs, take a look at the User Manual, Ch. 8.8.6 Teleporting settings for the "--cpuidset" option and 10.5 Details about software virtualization. Just remember, the higher the chapter number, the more advanced it is and the less help you're going to find... ;)

Hello there!
I would like to ask. There are two questions I would like to ask next.
The first question: How many CPU experiment template? I see you reply that six experimental templates.

The second question: The use of those Vboxmanage command operation and experimental template can achieve the same effect. Are there any examples?

Looking forward to your reply, thanks

This hasn't changed as far as I know.

Tong wrote:The use of those Vboxmanage command operation and experimental template can achieve the same effect.
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. Can you rephrase the question?

Tong wrote:Are there any examples?
Examples of where these profiles can be used? Just search for "cpu-profile site:forums.virtualbox.org". You don't have to use them if you don't need them. You shouldn't be using them in fact unless you know what you're doing. Or what problem you're trying to solve...

Vbox 6.1 has no such option:

Yes, it has. Take a look at the (wrong) quote characters you're using. ;)
