Shortcut commands being intercepted by Virtualbox

So I have a Linux OS running and I'm using the terminal and I'm trying to read in a file through pico using Ctrl+r but this was asking to reset vbox... so I disabled the Ctrl+r shortcut in the preferences... but I still can't get pico to get my command of Ctrl+r what am I missing?
