VM stuck at "stopping" state when shutting down

VM stuck at "stopping" state when shutting down

Postby billtt » 27. May 2008, 08:27

I am using vb 1.6 amd64 version on a WindowsXP 64bit host system, with a guest system of ubuntu 8.04.
The problem is, the virtual machine will often be stuck at "stopping" state when I shut down Linux, and will never resume. And when a vm is stuck, I cannot start another guest system, and the virtualbox process on host system cannot be killed, neither can host shut down or restart normally. I have to reset my host machine every time this happens.
Anyone has any idea how to fix this? Thanks a lot!

I am having the exact same problem using VirtualBox 4.1.6 with a guest OS of redhat. The virtual machine keeps getting stuck at stopping state and the only temporary fix I have is to reboot the host machine running the VM. I haven't found any fixes for this problem.

How about updating to a later version of VirtualBox? There have been six updates to VBox since v4.1.8, not counting the v4.2 betas, so perhaps the problem was fixed?

ps. I don't know if you noticed that you were commenting on a four year old message - there have been rather more software updates in that time!

I know this topic is really old, but same problem still persist in latest vbox:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
virtualbox is already the newest version (5.0.24-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.1).
my os: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS 64

getting this state randomly on stop/restart few of my VMs (guest OSes: freebsd9_amd64/linux_amd64).
Tried to disable preview in phpvirtualboxweb, disabled 3D-acceleration in video-adapter preferences of VM.
Found many similar old topics and bugreports (all closed due to inactivity).

ALso have some other errors in vboxSVC.log:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
16:33:16.543110 nspr-4   Failed to open "/dev/vboxdrvu", errno=13, rc=VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_ACCESSIBLE

Already gave 644 permissions to this device:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
crw-rw-r-- 1 root vbox 10, 54 Sep  5 10:28 /dev/vboxdrvu

but have same error in logs.

A problem from 2008 is not going to be relevant now. Please start a new topic and describe your problem accurately, and provide a VM log.

Locking this one.

Just to add, you are using the Ubuntu repo fork and need to ask them what to do since they are the maintainer for the source you are using or switch to the official version from VirtualBox.org.
