I mean to set up a virtual environment for heuristic detection

Depth,

Although I haven't done this on a usb stick, I would assume that you would have to set your live distro as a proxy server (squid most likely). You would also need an anti-virus program of some sort. The question is if there is one that has been made usable in such a way that you can install it on the usb drive.

Anyone out there: can this be done? O.k., that's silly. What I mean is, has someone already done this?

A commercial company is doing something similar with usb pc's
(http://www.techshout.com/software/2007/ ... ty-systems ). It would be fun to do this with the usb linux installations.

Another issue would be connection speed. If you funnel everything through the linux distro, how much slow down would you have on your internet connection? Heuristic virus detection is inherently slow as well, not to mention memory/cpu intensive.

Some things to think about.

I'll look around later and see what I can find.

Anti virus thingy

As I was thinking about my post, I realized that I might have gone overboard. I was thinking real time virus checking and filtering (i.e., network filtering), etc.

Depth, I am thinking you want something you can plug into the usb drive and scan your HD from there. Is this right?

Honestly, there are enough free virus-scan programs out there for windows, that I wouldn't bother getting too technical about this. I believe there are free ones for linux as well.

Any reason why you want to do virus scanning from the thumb drive?
