Guest Additions .iso not ejecting from guest

Post by loukingjr »

I mentioned this is the discuss 4.3.10 thread but I thought it was worth it's own post.
I noticed on both Windows guests and Linux guests, when you eject the Guest Additions .iso from the guest, although in the guest it looks like it was ejected, after shutting down the guest, the .iso is still attached. I tried it with Windows 7 & 8.1 guests and a few Linux guests.
it's been going on for a few versions. Mac Host but I don't think it's a Mac Host Issue.

edit: I forgot to mention, if after the guest is shut down you go into the VirtualBox Settings for a guest and remove the .iso from there it remembers.

Steps to recreate the problem..
1. open a guest
2. insert guest additions cd image
3. eject the image from the guest
4. shutdown the guest

in the VirtualBox Manager GUI the guest additions still show as mounted in "Storage".

Considering the lack of impact on the Guest OS, why is this important ?

Well two things. First of all VirtualBox didn't behave that way in the past. And the second thing is, if you run a guest such as Ubuntu* and you forget to detach it from the guest, a dialog will pop up asking if you want to run the guest additions every time it boots. Several Linux distros do the same depending on DE. It's the same as the pointless setting for Mac users to "Auto-Show in Fullscreen" for the Dock and Menubar which does nothing different whether enabled or not.

edit: *actually nearly all Linux distro will at least bring up a dialog asking what you want to do with it. Run it, open it in a folder, nothing.

Reads like a Ubuntu problem. If the Guest OS is a Windows, this does not occur, yes?

I edited my post. It occurs in some way or fashion in all Linux guests. But no, not in Windows. At least not in 7 or 8.1. I can't speak to XP because I have no XP guest.

Humm,

I have seen this from time to time if you select to remove the CD/DVD from the devices menu, but if one ejects it from within the guest it works. There was an issue back when they had the manager issue that would not update the control file unless you manually stop the VBoxSVC, but they fixed that ( at least on Linux ) some time back. If I was to put a finger on what the common factor is I would say Mac as host. You may want to post a ticket at bugtracker and explain it there with a copy of the VBoxSVC file and log of the guest that causes the issue.

interesting PerryG. it's the exact opposite in my case. If I try and remove the Guest Additions .iso from the Devices menu it asks if I want to force unmount it. If I eject it from the guest, it disappears from the Devices menu, i.e. Remove... is greyed out. Yet it does not unmount in the VirtualBox GUI. It might be a Mac host issue but it does it with all guests. I suppose I could just pick one.

btw, it took me awhile to find the VBoxSVC file. For the Mac version, it's not a separate file but inside the contents of the VirtualBox package. There are actually three inside, I assume you mean the plain jane VboxSVC file.

I won't bother to ask why it's a bug.

Can't say that I haven't seen this from time-to-time, but in no way there's been a consistent issue. It's happened maybe less than 2% of the time, so I thought it was a temporary glitch. I'm on 10.6.8 if it makes any difference...

the fact that you are on 10.6.8 may very well make a difference. I don't really remember how long ago this first started happening but I know it has been quite a long time. was it before 10.9? I'm not sure.

Geez, I don't know why I hadn't thought of this before. I have an iMac that is still running 10.7.5. I'll install 4.3.10 on it and see what happens. lol
