Bridging & Wifi - Supported hardware

Postby noteirak » 29. Jun 2013, 12:54

It is time to draw a list of hardware for hardware known to work or not with Virtualbox Bridging over Wifi links. I will then import these info a general table and delete your reply.

Please make sure that the following information are as accurate as possible when submiting your result
The router/AP wifi with :
  • Manufacturer
  • Router/AP model
  • Firmware name
  • Firmware version
  • Works / MAC rewriting / Doesn't work

Your wifi card with
  • Manufacturer

Sorry I can't add more technical information but here's what I do know that works.

Router: Verizon MI424WR (FIOS)

Wifi card: built in AirPort Extreme
Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)

Host: iMac 13,2 - OSX 10.9.2
VirtualBox 4.3.10
VMs all working with NAT or Bridged Wi-Fi (Airport)

the manual states, "On Macintosh hosts... Currently, VirtualBox supports only IPv4 over AirPort.". Mine seems to work despite having IPx6 enabled although some people still can't use Bridged networking with Macs.

edit: I forgot to mention all VMs work when using an Apple Time Capsule when it is connected by an Ethernet cable to the above mentioned router..

Router
  • Model: BT HomeHub 3
  • Security: WPA/WPA2 personal.
WiFi card
  • AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x112)
  • Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (6.30.223.154.63)
  • Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Host
  • Apple Retina MacBook Pro 13", Oct 2013
  • OS: Mac OS X 10.9.2
VirtualBox
  • 4.3.10
Results
  • Generally ok but sometimes takes 20-30 seconds to get an ip address

Note, at work I couldn't get a bridged DHCP ip address, that was a router/dhcp server issue (not sure what kind of router). For whatever reason there wasn't a response to the IP address request but I didn't have any problem at home.

20-30 seconds seems like a very long time to get an IP address.

26.11.2017 --> Update

Hello,
Additional information :

Host : Windows 10 Home Edition 1703 (OS 15063.726)
VBOX : 5.2.0 r118431
All drivers updated (BIOS, Chipset, WIFI) from Acer

Just plug an USB-3 --> RJ45 adapter Digitus DN-3023 (No RJ45 native plug in this notebook) and Bridge Mode work perfectly over this adapter (but always not on the WIFI).

Thank you

André
