dynamic disk doesn't grow

This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

dynamic disk doesn't grow

Postby lolveley » 16. Jun 2013, 22:33

hello

I donwloaded virtualbox and installed it on a macos host.
the guest is a windows XP.
all worked, it had a dynamic disk.

but I installed dropbox on the guest, and there were some files transferred to the guest hard disk, and I had a warning fro windows telling me : "there is nearly no more free space".Indeed, the hard disk had only a few megabytes free.

I don't understand this because, as the guest has a dynamic disk, its size should grow when the free space is too reduced...

There are 100 Go free on the host hard disk.

can you explain me what happened? Is it linked to the dropbox software?

thanks

Dynamic will only means that the file where the guest data reside, on the host, will grow automatically as required. it will NOT shrink automatically.
Also, the file is only a hard drive emulation. Just like a harddrive, you also have to handle the partitions inside the guest. You might want to to increase these too.

it doesn't work!

hello

I saw that in VB 4 and later, only the first step of the tutorial you told me about was necessary, so I entered the command :

VBoxManage modifyhd xp.vdi --resize 10240

and
- in the mac explorer, the file's size is still 3,32 Go.
- in the VB window, I saw that the "virtual size" is 10Go, but the "actual size" is 3,09 Go.

can you understand this fact?how to resolve this problem?

thank you

well, look at this : http://www.webupd8.org/2011/02/how-to-easily-resize-virtualbox-40-hard.html

I will download gparted while you have a look!

Olivier,

mpack gave you a link on how to do this. Why would you think that a different site would know more about what you needed to do?
Its pointless to ask for help and then not use it.

ok, sorry, it's true is's not very polite.

I searched this because after the command (step 1 of the tutorial) the VDI file did not grow in the mac explorer, as I think it should have, so I thought there was a problem.( my english is not very right...)

Read the tutorial again, and this time pay attention to the second step, involving "gparted".

I'm just totally baffled. I was under the assumption the HD would resize automaticallly as required otherwise I would have given it a bigger size when I set it up. So now I have to go through the painful long install again that I've had to roll back.

Also, how does this reply make sense? "Dynamic will only means that the file where the guest data reside, on the host, will grow automatically as required. it will NOT shrink automatically.
Also, the file is only a hard drive emulation. Just like a harddrive, you also have to handle the partitions inside the guest. You might want to to increase these too."

No one asked why it wasn't SHRINKING and "file where the guest data reside, on the host, will grow automatically" is just FALSE because it doesn't automatically grow unless I'm missing something.

@NickNak,

Yes you are missing something. Let's look at how dynamic HD works in VBox.

    1) you create a dynamic 10GB virtual HD. If you look at the files size now it will be a few hundred bytes.
    2) you install an OS that is approx. 4 GB When you look at the size in the guest settings you will see 10 GB drive, but if you look at the actual hard drive size you will see it is only 4 GB.

The dynamic drive will grow to the max of 10 GB since that is the size specified at creation.

If you don't bother to read the docs, which are really quite clear on this subject, then I'm afraid there is little we can do about your assumptions.

Regardless, that is water under the bridge. I assume the problem now is that you made the capacity (a.k.a. maximum size) too small, so you need to read Howto: Resize a Virtual Drive.

In my case the resizing does not increase available memory.

I have followed the How to resize a Virtual Drive.

Selecting my ubuntu14.04 virtual guest from the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager GUI and checking the storage I can see that yes, the Virtual Size has grown as intended. Also if I launch gparted in the virtual guest is tells that /dev/sda5 with mount point ubuntu-vg has grown and has now the unused space as I wanted.

But something is not right. E.g. command
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
df -h

displays the same data as before the resizing.
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
Filesystem                         Size  Used  Avail  Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/ubuntu--vg-root        6,5G  6,2G  96K   0% /

When trying to write a big file the guest gives an error message
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
... write error (disk full?) ...

After restarting the host virtualbox and then running the guest the GUI gives a Low Disk Space warning with a window telling
The volume "Filesystem root" has only 37,2MB disk space remaining.

From the host system I can see that the UbuntuDesktop14.04-disk1.vdi file size has not grown (I guess that this may be ok while the vdi file grows dynamically).

My host system is ubuntu14.04 and Virtualbox 4.3.10_Ubuntur r93012.
The guest does not have snapshots but it was cloned from a guest that did have snapshots.

Any ideas how to increase available memory?
