the problem is not on the guest or in the Vbox host installation, it#s in the guest additions. You can install the previous guest additions to fix the problem. Or the 4.2.13 beta.

This should prompt an outofband vbox update, or at least a new additions iso which implements the fix.

But only with VT-x.
Can run with software virtualization.
I found that I can use the SuSE default kernel.
Crash occurs only with the "desktop" kernel, which uses PAE.

Can someone please post some instructions on how to roll back to the 4.2.10? I'm getting the low graphics error after installing the Guest Additions. I see several users saying they have reverted, but I don't know how to do that.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS on host OS X 10.8.3. I downloaded 4.2.10 and I'm running that now, but I have no idea how to run the additions from the command line.

When I run the Ubuntu updates, sometimes I have to reinstall the guest additions after to get full screen resolution. But this time it broke it and now I can only get to the command line in Ubuntu. Thank you very much.

If you install dkms before hand this will update your VirtualBox kernel modules for you.
I would first try to run the following if you still have the 4.2.12 version of VBox installed.

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxadd setup

Not sure if that was in response to my question. I finally ran uninstall.sh and I am at least getting back in, but I don't have Guest Additions installed. I can't add the .iso for 4.2.13 for some reason. I get an error saying its the wrong type of media.

'...VBoxGuestAdditions_4.2.13-85100.iso' can't be used as the requested device type.

This is roughly what worked for me.
I went to this folder and downloaded Virtualbox and the extension pack for 4.2.10
Ooops can't post urls. You can working out where by removing () or just edit the current download link and substitute 4.2.10
download(.)virtualbox(.)org(/)virtualbox(/)4.2.10(/)
This looks like the file to install Virtualbox on OSX
download(.)virtualbox(.)org(/)virtualbox(/)4.2.10(/)VirtualBox-4.2.10-84104-OSX.dmg
and this is the ext pack
download(.)virtualbox(.)org(/)virtualbox(/)4.2.10(/)Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.10-84104.vbox-extpack
I then re-installed virtualbox 4.2.10 from the downloaded file.
After re-installing virtualbox executed the extpack file to downgrade to 4.2.10
restarted the Ubuntu virtual machine with graphics issues.
clicked until the messages disappeared and a terminal login prompt was visible (ctrl+alt+F1 would probably be quicker)
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom
cd /cdrom/
sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
sudo reboot

Does this solve the the "the system is running in low-graphics mode" issue?

Thanks

My SHA256 for virtualbox-4.2_4.2.12-84980~Ubuntu~precise_amd64.deb is different from the posted value. My MD5 agrees with the posted value.

Here is my SHA256: 37e72f40b8e9b1b1903450a24b84d0c57390598c58932cb7eb47f43625384ec4

What's the difference

Post by markfilipak2 »

I've searched and searched and can't find the answer: What's the difference between
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.12-84980.vbox-extpack
&
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.12.vbox-extpack?

Thanks - Mark.
