Were your 4.2.12 additions upgraded from 4.2.10 by any chance?
Yes.

Just an afterthought but all my Ubuntu guests have 128 MB video ram. And perhaps check to make sure under System Settings>Additional Drivers that the VirtualBox driver is not installed.

Re: "low-graphics mode" problem with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS guests

Further to my previous post, I just created a new VM with a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.2 Desktop (32-bit) on the Vista host, and after I installed the 4.2.12 Guest Additions and rebooted I did *NOT* get the "low-graphics mode" issue. (My previous attempt to upgrade Guest Additions from 4.2.10 to 4.2.12 for a Ubuntu 12.04.2 guest on that same host *did* encounter the problem.)

After the upgrade to 4.2.12 r84980 I'm seeing an assertion failure warning with OpenGL: "00:16:34.760450 OpenGL Warning: Assertion failed: !cr_server.curClient || !cr_server.curClient->currentMural || cr_server.curClient->currentMural == mural, file /home/vbox/vbox-4.2.12/src/VBox/HostServices/SharedOpenGL/crserverlib/server_window.c, line 395".

Attaching the relevant log file. This is a Windows 7 guest running under a Debian 7.0 host.

Thought I would check my Windows 7 guest install. After updating to the 4.2.12 additions everything is fine.

I also received the low graphics mode error after installing 4.2.12. I was finally able to get Ubuntu to boot again by uninstalling guest additions using /opt/[VboxAddonsFolder]/uninstall.sh

I attached log files of when it fails to boot and also one file when I uninstalled 4.2.12 and had successful boots.

Another one with Guest Additions problems.

Win7 host, Kubuntu 12.04 guest, VirtualBox 4.2.12.

Starting from current (not saved) state, I uninstalled prior guest additions 4.2.8, uninstalled DKMS, update&upgrade system, power-down, power-up, install DKMS, installed 4.2.12 guest additions, reboot and then it hangs with no message.

I also had the "the system is running in low-graphics mode" issue. Running on Windows 7, standard Ubuntu 12.4 as guest. Managed to get back to working system on VB 4.2.10 after considerable messing about. Ubuntu system either came up blank or with the low graphic message initially - only able to get a grasp of system after getting into Safe-mode. Had to go back to 4.2.8 to get system working again, and then had problems getting 4.2.10 extensions working after re-installing 4.2.10 but eventually it worked.

VB is excellent product and usually upgrades work seamlessly. I'm a user rather than a systems person so I haven't time to spend a lot of time logging problems etc. Would be much appreciated if developers could it clear that this problem is fixed in next version. I'm not going to upgrade again until I know definitely that this problem won't recur.

Same here with the "low graphics mode" in Ubuntu 12.04.01 guest, WIndows7 host.

All was fine prior on VirtualBox 4.2.10 w/ GuestAdditions. I upgraded, and the guest OS failed. Not until either: A) removing guest additions, or B) uninstalling the VBox and downgrading back to 4.2.10 (including GA) did I get a working system again.

Also as per viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55118

Please contact me if you'd like additional testing, or logs.

Can someone please test - or report explicitly - that Ubuntu guests are fine on v4.2.12 if an earlier guest additions is used? I.e. if you don't bother updating the GAs?

Hi,
I have same problem on host pc MacOSX Mountain L (VBox 4.2.12 + VBoxGuestAdd 4.2.12) and guest Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS vm.
After several attempts I find following trivial solution: uninstall VBoxGuestAdd 4.2.12 and delete VBoxGuestAddition.iso file for replacing such file with 4.2.10 version.
I believe the problem is in the VBoxGuestAddition.iso file, may be in the package building error :-)

I am running and Ubuntu 12.04.2 32-bit guest on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit host. My guest survived the upgrade to VirtualBox 4.2.12, including the Extensions Pack, just fine. However, when I updated to the 4.2.12 Guest Additions, I suffered the same "graphics mode" issue others have described here. I was lucky enough to have just created a snapshot of my guest, though. When I reverted to the snapshot with the 4.2.10 guest additions running on it, everything was fine again.

ADDENDUM: I also verified that on the same host system, my Windows XP Pro Guest OS was perfectly fine with the 4.2.12 Guest Additions update.

Yep, it's pretty clear by now that the problem has something to do with the interaction between an Ubuntu guest (maybe only Ubuntu 12.04), and the v4.2.12 GAs. AIUI, Ubuntu 12.04 is not actually released yet?
