I've installed VB 4.2.6 on my Macbook Air running OS X 10.8.2 with 4.2.6 extension pack. When I try to install guest additions to my (up to date) Ubuntu 12.04 guest the guest aborts immediately after I enter my sudo password. Every time. The guest is running gnome-shell rather than unity, if it matters.

Actually, further to my previous comment, VB 4.2.6 aborts my guest within a minute or so regardless of what I am doing. And it seems Oracle have not placed the previous VB 4.2.4 in the older builds area yet so I will have to go back to VB 4.2.2. :(

Or, open a separate discussion topic and attach the VM log for a failed session.

resize scrollbars appear after restoring a snapshot

Post by rogerdpack »

Hello all. Not exactly a 4.2.6 issue, but still present in 4.2.6...

I've noticed that if I install the guest additions, and resize a "guest" VM, it works great. It resizes well. If I then "Save the machine state" and then restart the VM, it comes up with the (typically associated with guests *without* guest additions) scrollbars on the bottom and right. If I resize the guest VM "at all" (even one pixel) then they immediately go away, and it works great.

Machine in question: Windows 7 host, ubuntu 32 bit guest, VBox 4.2.6, guest additions 4.2.6 installed.
It's quite reproducible. Should I file a trac do you think?
Thank you!

I reinstalled VB 4.2.6, plus it's extension pack on my MBA OS X 10.8.2, removed all my guest ubuntu 12.04 log files, and then booted the guest. I was able to install the new guest additions this time but after rebooting the guest it aborted soon after. I have attached the log here. Back to VB 4.2.4 now. Note I am still using Ubuntu 12.04 guest only because of the VB 3D bug with a Ubuntu 12.10 guest, which btw I can find no mention of being addressed in VB 4.2.6 release notes, nor any mention of 4.2.6 release in the "major" bug https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11107 which has existed for months now.

"bulletmark"

Note I am still using Ubuntu 12.04 guest only because of the VB 3D bug with a Ubuntu 12.10 guest, which btw I can find no mention of being addressed in VB 4.2.6 release notes, nor any mention of 4.2.6 release in the "major" bug https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/11107 which has existed for months now.
I can only speculate but I think this is because the ticket only provided a basic fix (work around). If you track the changelog of SVN you will see that they are working hard at resolving several difficult issues around this major change in the distros and their upstream providers related to hardware/software 3D rendering.

Same issue upgrading from 4.2.4 to 4.2.6 as I had previously* (upgrading from 4.2.0 to 4.2.2):

"--Error Renaming Connection-- Cannot rename this connection. A connection with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different name."

The VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter disappears entirely from the VirtualBox Settings GUI, and the host networking interfaces are left in some sort of funky error state (red 'X' in system-tray networking icon).

The work-arounds are either to doctor host-only networking post-install, or to uninstall 4.2.4 before installing 4.2.6.

An zero-byte file is created on the virtual machine hard drive, replacing the file data, if you try to restart the virtual machine. French is already here.
