The assessment does not work but aero does work anyway. Make sure that you have the latest graphics drivers for your Host and see if that helps. I had issues until I installed the latest nVidia drivers on my host as well. You might post the guests log file (as an attachment) for the DEVs to see as well.

One last thing. I understand that IF you had installed the 3D drivers in safe mode and anytime you must make sure that you put the original Windows files back before it will work. If this is the case let me know and I will tell you how to proceed.

I just went ahead and deleted the vdi, made a new one and just installed the new 3D driver like you said.

Installs, and wondered how I would get aero working without the WEI working like you say it doesn't work. So I change the theme to the Windows 7 aero theme form Personalize, and it enables aero finally but starts flickering unstably at random until it crashes the dwm.exe Windows Desktop manager and reverts back to basic theme.

Tried a few times, rebooted. Same thing after changing to an aero theme, desktop goes to aero and turns unstable, flickering and black screen until it crashes dwm.exe.

So I guess it has a problem with my nVidia GTX 480, or some setting or both. I don't know.

I am already running the latest drivers for my card (GTX 480) 275.33.

I know the driver is experimental, but it doesn't seem to want to work on my setup at all.

Attached logs.

Maybe try different (older?) NVIDIA driver?

I have no flickering here. (GTX560 + NV266.44 on Win7 x64)

That nVidia driver does work. Maybe not with your specific card but it does on one of my test machines. Try setting the vRam to 160MB and see if that helps. I ran into a condition that 128 just did not handle it properly and 256 may be another issue. Also see what happens if you set the guest to use 1 processor and let us know. Also as another test set the RAM to less than 3GB as well.

I had some issues with mouse cursor in 4.1 windows guest additions. I had to reinstall 4.0.12 to reinstall windows additions 4.0.12... then upgrade to 4.1 but without upgrading the guest additions.. and now it works as usual.

Yes, true. I also had this minor bug with mouse cursor, but overlooked it somehow. (instead of filling in the BETA forum)

Installing 4.1 GA solved it for me.

I've switched to every different settings that perryg suggested, and more configuration beyond that. Still same results with many different configurations.

I can try an older Nvidia driver as an experiment to see if it fixes it, but if it does fix it completely, it's not worth it to me to regularly use older outdated drivers on my host system just to use aero in VB.

Thanks for the suggestions so far though.

Congrats on the release. I also love the sheep clone icon in the snapshots window. If you remember Dolly the sheep: very good use of an icon!

Perryg wrote:@dave78ab,
When you install the Guest additions (in the guest) click through slowly and then when given the option to select 3D click the box.
A warning will appear and you need to read it carefully. You should actually select *NO here to install the wddm drivers or the installer will try to install the normal 3D drivers and that will fail if not in safe mode.
I have to say that this doesn't match what I saw with an XP Pro guest. The warning dialog box about needing safe mode only had an "Ok" button on it, not yes/no. I eventually gave up trying to get past this, and I installed the GAs in safe mode. There was no other intermediate dialog displayed after I ticked the 3D box.

WDDM (and those, yes/no question) is only for Vista/7 guests.

Related to the cursor integration not working with 4.1, on a whim I tried turning off 3D Acceleration in Settings and restarted my VM. Now cursor integration works again...

Apple released OSX Lion today, and my new MacBook Pro comes today as well. After installing Lion, VirtualBox will be the first application I install. I look forward to 4.1 working without a hitch ;)
