Setting up CPU's

I am sure this question has been asked and answered several times but I don't understand these things well enough to understand what I am reading. Hopefully someone can answer this in a clear manner I can understand.

My computer has an AMD Phenom II X4 945. As I understand it this is a single CPU with 4 cores. What does the guest "see" if I set up VirtualBox with a 1(one) for the number of Processor(s)? Does the guest OS see one CPU with 4 cores or one core? If I want the host to have two cores and the guest to have two cores do I set up two Processors instead? If I do this it looks to me like the Windows guest sees two physical CPU's which I don't think does my old Windows software any benefit. I'm just trying to figure out the best setup for a personal desktop computer running Linux as the host with a Guest Windows XP desktop system, and balance the power between them.

Thanks
