Hi, fairly new user.
VB Ver 3.1.6r59338
Ubuntu 9.10 host
Ferdora 12 guest
I have set-up Fedora 12 as a guest and gave it 8gb to play with (in VMware Workstation initially). Everything is working fine other than it has run out of space. This is a fresh install with all the updates and Guest Additions installed. It has used 4gb of the 8gb and won't let me install anything else.
/dev/mapper/VolGroup-lv_root type - ext4, size - 3.9gb, mount point /, free 43.8mb, full 98.9%
/dev/sda1 type - ext4, size - 193.7mb, mount point /boot, free 140.4mb, full 27.5%
From the Storage area in Sun VirtualBox:
IDE Primary Master: Fedora 12 64bit.vmdk (Normal, 8.00 GB)
Any ideas, help, suggestions would be appreciated. I'm asking here because I prefer to use VB, but don't want to start from scratch and have to d/l hours of updates. Regardless of using VMware or Virtualbox, 8gb is 8gb and either should be able to see and use it all, yet they don't. Is this an issue with Fedora?
Thanks, Glen

I doubt it.muskoka wrote:Is this an issue with Fedora?
Reading between the lines, it looks like you created an 8GB drive, and then you created a 4GB partition within the drive. Possibly you are using a second 4GB partition as a swap area. The 4GB user partition is now full. Cloning the drive and expanding it to a larger size is probably your next step (use google to search this site for info on expanding a drive).
Re: Partition not auto sizing?
Hello, thanks for answering.
I didn't set/change any options when setting up/partitioning Fedora. I just accepted the defaults and figured it was using the whole 8gb . I was able to remove some files I didn't need and installed gparted.
gparted shows:
/dev/sda1 ext4 boot 200mb 49.58 used.
/dev/sda2 lvm2 no mount point 7.8gb in size.
Having not set any partition options when I installed Fedora where did the space go and how do I go about accessing the other 4gb that was allocated to the root system? The other 4gb has to be there somewhere. How do I see if there was somehow a swap file of 4gb created, I know I didn't do it, or does Fedora do it as a default. As I recall, it recognized the 8gb drive and asked if I want to use it and I said yes, I just accepted the default settings. Just to add, this was with a Live cd. Again, thanks for any help.

Re: Partition not auto sizing?
I'm not a Linux user (any flavour) and so can't field detailed questions of how to configure a particular Linux flavour. All I can do is use my experience to recognize generic problems, e.g. I recognize that yours is a partition size problem, though you seem to be having trouble identifying the correct partition. Look around, you have a partition somewhere which is approximately 4GB, now 98% full. You also seem to have a 200MB root partition thats mostly empty, and there's probably also a swap partition (usually 2GB or so) kicking around.
Incidentally, questions about configuring a Linux guest really belong in the "Linux Guests" forum (or even on a Fedora discussion site, since this really has very little to do with VBox). "Using VirtualBox" should be used for questions regarding the VirtualBox software itself.

Re: Partition not auto sizing?
Hi again, and thanks for taking the time to answer.
Yes, I do admit this is a bit of a grey area, Fedora or VirtualBox/VMware. I have installed Ubuntu many times, on it's own, in a dual boot, and as a guest VM and never had any issues. The reason I asked on these forums is I was hoping to get a "VirtualBox" answer as I prefer it to VMware. Prior to coming here I did scour the Fedora and VMware forums and didn't find anything relative to the problem.
The problem I have is I can't see what partitions Fedora set up. I also have Linux Mint 8 installed without issue. I did the same with Mint (it's was also created with VMware) and just accepted the defaults while installing, and in gparted it shows:
/dev/sda1, ext4, / (Mount Point), size 7.61gb, 3.29gb used, 4.32gb unused, boot
/dev/sda2, extended, size 400.06mb
/dev/sda5, linux-swap, size 400.03mb
Looks, and works fine.
This is the way Fedora should look (in my mind), but it doesn't. Must have something to do with Fedora's installer, something I clearly don't understand. Anyways, it's not really a big issue. I will just remove Fedora, as I really prefer to use Ubuntu or Mint. I was just having a look at Fedora. Thanks for your help.

Re: Partition not auto sizing?
Well, did I have a lot to learn about Fedora and LVM. Anyways it's all sorted out now, my lack of knowledge with Fedora was the problem. Boot to Live CD, install system-config-lvm, then you can see how the partitions are set-up and make adjustments. Thanks again for the help. Oh, and yes, swap was taking up 4gb.
