A really daft question

Post by devlin7 »

I work in a school and my main problem is keeping the various systems up to date. The Windows updates apply themselves and the antivirus looks after itself but the other apps [and there are a lot of them] need manual updates. I normally create a new workstation image and once a term, pump out a new machine image using RIS. This is a complete system rebuiild each time.

I have been using Virtual box and wondered whether anyone has found a minimal Linux boot image that can load Virtualbox to download and boot automatically off the network an XP image. I know this is a little bit like PXE booting Xp and it might be really slow [haven't tried it]. I can boot Linux ISO across the network at a rapid rate of knots and wondered whether XP will also work this way.

I am interested in any feedback. What minimal Linux packages can run VirtualBox?

debootstrap should do that. It is the initial Debian Installation without any graphic installations. With it you have to work with the console.
