Hello,
I recently noticed the option to encrypt the virtual disk created by virtualbox for each individual virtual machine.
The idea itself is very interesting, but let's say there was a power outage at my house (shutting down my computer), and in the process I was using the virtual machine, what would happen?
Would the disk become unusable and essentially have to be thrown away?
Question about vbox encrypted disk option

I don't see why. Does your PC use RAMdisks?VapoRub wrote: Would the disk become unusable and essentially have to be thrown away?
As with any power cut, you can lose anything that isn't saved. I recommend that you fully power down the VM every day, do not "save state".
And make sure you understand how to back up a VM correctly, and do it frequently: see Howto: Move a VM (backing up and restoring are each just special cases of moving/copying a VM). If ever you lose or damage the .vbox file for the VM, the contents of the drive will be lost, even if you remember the password.
