How to add encrypted disk from a backup

Post by SebasBinsol »

I had an encrypted virtual machine on my PC (Windows Host). The SDD died, but I had a full backup of all files. Virtualbox does not allow me to add (the backuped disk) the disks as encrypted disks. So I can't find how to restore the virtual machine. ¿Can someone help me with this? I've been searching the forum and the web for days and no information appears.

Big kudos to you for having a backup! Very wise! :D

If 'all files' means the encrypted VM's .vbox file, then you don't need to do anything special. Bring back the VM's whole set of files in the VM folder over and double-click the .vbox file *. It should register and be ready to start.

If you have any errors, please let us know the exact error messages.

* The .vbox file carries the encryption key that works with your password to unlock the drive encryption. Losing the .vbox file will result in loss of the drive too.
