Rookie here: No adapters available error (6.1.38)
Rookie here: No adapters available error (6.1.38)
New guy - minimal experience: Loaded and running VBox 6.1.38 (win2K pro environment) on a Win 11 PC. Trying to load and run old software (game) in Win2K but when running, I get a 'No adapters available. error and the software crashed out. Searching leads me to believe network adapter settings, of which I have tried several - no joy. Suggestions?

Right-click the VM in the main Virtualbox window's VM list, choose Show in Explorer/Finder/File Manager. Zip the VM's .vbox file (not the .vbox-prev file), and post the zip file, using the forum's Upload Attachment tab. (Configure your host OS to show all extensions if the folder that opens does not show a .vbox file.)

Re: Rookie here: No adapters available error (6.1.38)
I doubt that this error has anything to do with network cards. I suspect that this is a message from the game, complaining that it doesn't recognize any available graphics adapter.
If so, then unfortunately I don't believe this is fixable. Normally you would try installing the Guest Additions, however Windows versions prior to Win7 no longer get hardware accelerated graphics in VirtualBox 6.1.x.
You could try reverting to an older VirtualBox version, however if the game is really looking for a specific, supported graphics adapter then this isn't fixable at all. VirtualBox doesn't emulate a specific graphics card: accelerated capabilities are only available in Windows guests through driver interfaces, i.e. Direct3D 8/9 or OpenGL 2.1.
We could tell more from a VM log. Make sure the VM is fully shut down, then right click it in the manager UI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (no other file) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Re: Rookie here: No adapters available error (6.1.38)
I see you used the "XP (64bit)" template - almost certainly incorrect. Having a 64bit capable host CPU doesn't cause the guest OS to be 64bit. I.e. switch to the "XP (32bit)" template.
I see you provided 4 cores to the XP guest. 2 should be plenty, and XP may be ignoring even that depending on what HAL was originally installed (XP is not "plug and play" regarding motherboard features).
No 3D acceleration is available for games or anything else. But that's ok: you are running VirtualBox 6.1.38, which doesn't provide 3D acceleration to XP guests anyway.
The GAs are installed, good.
Your 8GB hard disk is too small. This needs to be around 32GB.
Of course I don't expect that any of this will let your game run: as I said before, I don't believe that problem is fixable. But you could trying reverting to an older VirtualBox version (e.g. 6.0.x) which supports 3D acceleration in XP with the VBoxVGA adapter. Uninstall the 6.1.38 GAs first, as having newer GAs or extpack is a big no-no.

In addition to what mpack wrote:
The guest OS seems to be Windows 2000 (5.0 build 2195), so you should set General > Basic > Version to Windows 2000. This probably also addresses the 32/64-bit question (unless you have an unofficial Windows 2000 64-bit Janus variant ).WinXP-2022-09-25-18-22-27.log wrote:00:00:24.091849 VMMDev: Guest Log: 20:21:50.703125 main OS Product: Windows 2000 00:00:24.091873 VMMDev: Guest Log: 20:21:50.703125 main OS Release: 5.0.2195
I see that you chose the Intel PRO/1000 T Server (82543GC) network adapter, which is automatically supported by Windows XP, but is it also automatically supported by Windows 2000?WinXP-2022-09-25-18-22-27.log wrote:00:00:24.113474 VMMDev: Guest Log: 20:21:50.720312 vminfo VMInfo/Network: Network is not up yet.
