This is for discussing general topics about how to use VirtualBox.

Windows 10, running as VirtualBox guest in Ubuntu 20.04, does not see USB flash drive

Post by JohnRose »

I'm running Windows 10 as a VM under VirtualBox in Ubuntu 20.04. I've put a USB flash drive in a USB socket and Ubuntu sees it Ok. Windows 10 VM doesn't see the drive, even though I've enabled USB 'passthrough' in VirtualBox: in other words, VirtualBox sees the drive but the Windows 10 VM doesn't. Also, Ubuntu 20.04 sees the phone the using Nautilus (the equivalent of File Explorer). Native Windows 10 sees the drive. I've looked at Device Manager and against the USB Mass Storage Device (in USB Serial Bus Controllers) there's a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark against it. I've tried right clicking the entry and uninstalling it, rebooting Windows and installing it again but I get nowhere.

I have read through through USB basics and troubleshooting.
However, that thread is locked. So I cannot post the following details to it:

The VM has to be fully shut down, not save-stated, to change this setting. It's like changing a card in a physical computer: most compurets don't like that happening while the computer is powered up. The Virtualbox computer comes with a "case lock", so to speak, which prevents you from changing hardware while the computer is not powered down.

Once you get at least USB 2, or 3 even better, the drive will probably show up in the VM. Please re-post fresh diagnostic data if you get 2 or 3 enabled but the device does not show up.

I have shut down the VM and rebooted Ubuntu 20.04 BEFORE I took the attached screenshot of the USB Settings. Please note also the message about the Display on it: when I click on that message it says that I should use the recommended VBoxSVGA (not able to take screenshot showing that message as it disappears when I move the mouse away in order to take a screenshot). I have also attached a screenshot of the Display Settings, which shows that the Display is using VBoxVGA which I am not able to change due to the Graphics Controller option for that being greyed out.

It's good to read and try and acknowledge what was posted on your topic before posting again. None of what I suggested appears to have been tried.

@scottgus1 Stop being sarcastic. You are treating me like a naughty child. I had closed down VirtualBox. I had to start it again in order to produce screenshots of the problem(s). At that time, the Windows 10 VM was NOT started.

Your VM is being save-stated, not fully shut down.
