Reusing VMs on VirtualBox 6.1

Post by newbie01 »

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to get familiar with Virtual box(6.1.16r140961) and wondering how can I reuse the crated VMs. Like in VMware workstation I created the necessary Win Servers and then run a sysprep >> I copy this fresh image and paste it whenever I want to use it multiple times that brings up the new machine for me. Similarly in Linux, I do the necessary configuration and shutdown the machine. Copy this customized installation and paste it multiple times to reuse.

Tried doing the same in Virtual Box, however got the following error:

Failed to open virtual machine. Trying to open a VM config which has the same UUID as an existing virtual Machine >> Seems Virutal Box is assinging the machine IDs and hence the error. How do I re-use a VM instead of creating a fresh VM everytime which takes more time. Snapshot is fine for a single machien but I need to create multiple servers to test the use-cases.

Howto: Move a VM.

But if you want to make two copies on the same host then you should be cloning. See user manual section 1.13.
