It looks like it's still the same today (May 2021), even with VirtualBox 6.1.22.

I had the same problem. It's a know bug, fixed in 6.1.6 (out now). I can confirm first-hand that the new version fixes the problem. Don't forget to update the guest additions in the VM.

I usually need to create many snapshots at different points in time. This makes a mess, because every snapshot is a child of the one before, and deleting any of them take HOURS. I'd rather create full/complete snapshots without any hierarchy tree ! Is it possible?

I found a workaround: Since the message was related to SMP, I limited the VM to 1 core (previously it had 2 cores). After this, it boots as expected.

I fresh-installed Ubuntu 17.04 (full-wipe and reinstall). Same problem:

No change with audio disabled. Will try tomorrow with a fresh install, but I expect the same result.
