I changed the settings in the BIOS and things worked. Thanks a lot for your help. Hardware virtualization was disabled in my BIOS setting earlier. Ubuntu works like a charm now

I don't know the internal details of a Virtual box, so when you mentioned First re-enable hardware visualization in your bios and leave VT-x/AMD-v enabled in the guests I thought enabling hardware visualization and enabling VT-x/AMD-v are two different things (I hope my understanding is correct now)...

How do I re-enable hardware virtualization in your bios ? The Ubuntu I downloaded was a 32-bit one.

I am using a Lenovo Z580 laptop running a 64-bit Windows 7 OS. I recently downloaded and installed Virtual Box 4.2.0 (32-bit - Recommended). Installation was fine.
