I get the impression that if you are not running anything other than the plain out of the box distro, That is listed in the download page. i.e ubuntu 9.04 not kubuntu 9.04 then you are likely to encounter problems, i just tried this using linux mint, ultimate edition and plain old jaunty 9.04, only ...

Did they actually have broadband then, i thought they still used semaphore. :)

Seriously though. Is there a network manager in the windows OS if so does it show any thing other than dial up. if not you may be out of luck as i am pretty sure 3.1 is no longer supported.

Weird, I'm running Jaunty and have nothing in my /etc/fstab about usbfs or whatever. Are you sure you're a member of the vboxusers group? Yep, checked and double checked, it just didn't want to know. i read a few posts on various forums seems it may be machine related, although why or how i am not ...

Well all i can say is that until i followed those instructions no mater what i did i had no usb recognition,
i can now see usb storage and a usb modem (although i cant get it to work directly in VB it will work if its connected by the host)
