Re: VirtualBox failed to start.

[Update:] SOLVED: I had updated the environment variables to point to the correct mount point (e.g. /media/ic3_01/.VirtualBox/), but VirtualBox would still not start correctly. When I exited to a CLI, and issued "printenv VBOX_USER_HOME" it gave "/media/ic3_1/.VirtualBox/" which...

Re: VirtualBox failed to start.

fixedwheel, I have no idea what was wrong with me on June 4th when I reported that I did not have a /var/log/ directory because I checked and of course I do have one. I must have been out of my mind from sleep deprivation (Finals week at school). Any way, its the weekend now and I finally got some ...

Re: VirtualBox failed to start.

fixedwheel, Thank you for your response. When I had things referenced in fstab by dev instead of UUID the system was unstable because the device names change between reboots and this would confuse where the mount points were pointing too. Ever since fstab was switched to UUID references the systems ...

Re: VirtualBox failed to start.

[UPDATE] This problem is reoccurring. Description of problem (detailed): The mount points for my computers system had to be changed in order to fix some mount point errors. My fstab is now using UUID's which has stabilized the computer and solved many problems. I also reorganized the naming scheme ...

Re: VirtualBox failed to start.

jowilkin, Thank you very much for your response. I figured out what was happening this morning and solved the problem for which I will explain the answer, but first your post has raised a few questions that I desperately need some answers for. Questions: 1. Ever since I installed VirtualBox, my text...

[SOLVED AGAIN] VirtualBox failed to start.

System Specs: CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme X9650, 3GHz MEM: 4GB Host OS: Kubuntu (Hardy Haron v.8.04) Guest OS: WinXP Description / Background: I just finished setting up VitualBox to run a WinXP guest shared between two user accounts on the Kubuntu (Linux) host. Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

Sasquatch, Oops, ok I see them now. Those buttons are completely invisible if the user chooses to view websites with a black background. I had to change the display options in Firefox in order to see the edit button. I'm only making this clear in case any one else reading this thread is having the s...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

[CORRECTION] In the line that reads: "Ok, I've just checked the file permissions on the xml file in the machines folder, and when the VM was created VirtualBox assigned owner and group to user1, I changed the group to user2. I'm now going to login to user2's account to see if that did the trick...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

[UPDATE] I've deleted the ~/.VirtualBox/ folders and there contents from both user accounts. Sometimes when you get tired you forget to do simple things like reboot the computer or log out and back in after adding system wide environment variables. So, it was either, /etc/profile or /etc/envi...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

[UPDATE] I've also added the environment variable to the file /etc/profile Also, here is the output from ls -al VirtualBox.xml lrwxrwxrwx 1 user1 user1 39 2009-04-26 14:10 VirtualBox.xml -> /media/ic3_1/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml Note: that even though it shows user1 as the principle owner and group...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

[UPDATE] Adding the environment variable to the "/etc/environment" file (apparently this is a special system wide environment file) didn't seem to change anything. I added the following line on a line by itself at the end of the file: VBOX_USER_HOME=/media/ic3_1/.VirtualBox/ Creating the s...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

So basically, what were finding out here, is that the environment variable method for solving this problem doesn't work? Maybe there's some other place (other than .bashrc) that the OS checks to find where to look for VBOX_USER_HOME. Maybe in /etc/profile or something like that? I'll have to check, ...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

[UPDATE] Ok, so I moved the "/home/username/.VirtualBox" folder for both user1 and user2 (where "username" is the name of the respective users account) off the computer onto a storage disk. When starting VirtualBox from the user1 account, it started as if it was starting for the ...

Re: Linux host with 2 user accounts sharing the same WinXP Guest

ok, I think I am beginning to see where I was confused. When you mentioned the "master" xml file I thought you were referring to the xml file that gets created in the Machines directory named after the VM that got chosen when the VM was created. I think I'm beginning to understand the bigg...
