No, that became apparent it was needed after I got it working. What fixed it was removing the path to the VM & just using its name after VBoxManage during that command.

For future reference this change solved the issue:

Due to unrelated concerns, I've re-installed the guest VM using Windows 7 now rather than 10. The issue is no longer happening- am able to 'Show' from a headless state without problems.
