Cloning Virtual Box Image w/ Multiple Snapshots

Postby mholland » 18. Jul 2008, 16:13

This is a quick question, I am sure someone out there has an answer of a simple solution. I know how to clone images in VirtualBox, in fact I even put together a GUI to do this for me without having to do clonevdi, paramaters, yadda, yadda.

The question: Is it possible to clone a virtual disc images that has multiple snapshots into one fixed VDI file with the most recent snapshot. I dont want to lose the snapshots I have but want a fixed image at the most recent snapshot, hope this makes sense.

I hope you VirtualBox gurus out there have a solution, hack, or workaround for what I am trying to do.

Thanks.

Matt

I tried doing that but I could not figure out how to do it. I ended up deleting all other snapshots and then cloning from command line.

My problem solved by original poster in another thread

Postby Lacoste » 22. Jul 2008, 23:37

I found this thread first when trying to figure out how to clone a machine with snapshots, and later found the solution I needed posted by the OP of this thread over here http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=8014. When I re-read this post I realized the OP wanted to keep the snapshots. However, I just wanted the system cloned :) I'm simply adding this in case someone else finds this thread looking to solve that problem. The solution is to "discard" your snapshots, from oldest to newest, and they get incorporated into your original image. It says "Preserving changes to normal hard disk 'xxxx.vdi'"; this can actually take a while if there was a big change (say you have pre-SP3 and post-SP3 XP snapshots). Then you can clonevdi the original machine vdi.

To the OP .. thanks for the fix in the other thread! Is your GUI (mentioned above) for clonevdi available for download anywhere? Can you PM a link if you don't want to post it?

Thanks!

Any chance of getting the clone GUI?

Or how about adding a clone feature in VB?

Yea, I can post it for all to get. I am creating an app called VB Toolbox . I do not develop in the language that VB uses or I would otherwise be making mods left and right for it.

If it can be done through the command prompt I can work it into a simple GUI for all to download. I will likely start a thread for it soon, where I will add items as requested. Can help us out in the meantime while we wait for the other guys at SUN to add these very much needed additions.

You can download the GUI for the Image Cloner from the following locations. I will add features to the toolbox.. All you have to do is request, hopefully this will help speed up the process in which the features are added to virtualbox.
