Using Bonjour Shared Printer in Windows Guest on OSX Host

Postby creinhardt » 8. May 2008, 21:41

I'm trying to print from within my guest os (Windows XP Pro, host is OSX) using Bonjour. I have tried forwarding all the ports that Bonjour uses to the guest using these commands:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
vboxmanage setextradata "Windows" "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/Bonjour/Protocol" TCP

vboxmanage setextradata "Windows" "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/Bonjour/GuestPort" 5297

vboxmanage setextradata "Windows" "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcnet/0/LUN#0/Config/Bonjour/HostPort" 5297

But this gives me an error when I try to start the VM as OSX is currently using the ports. Is there a way to set up networking so that I can access my bonjour printer within my guest os (Windows XP Pro)?

Bonjour printing works great!

Here's what I did to get it working (easier than you might think):

1. Shutdown your XP guest and configure the VB network adapter. Set it to HOST INTERFACE instead of NAT. (my macbook is already behind a firewall and I am using the Airport card on an encrypted wireless, so not too concerned about this). Also, you have to pick your interface below (I selected Airport, though if you are wired you may need to pick Ethernet).

2. Install Apple's Bonjour 1.5 for Windows (yes, Apple made a Bonjour networking plugin for XP!).

3. Run the Bonjour Printer Wizard (from apple, comes with Bonjour install).

4. Select your network attached printer (mine is on attached to my Airport Extreme) in the wizard dialog. It's also listing my network fax I have running on my old G4 (tiger) which is just great (but I have no idea what driver I would pick for that!)

5. Finally, select your Windows printer driver from the huge list of printers. Mine is an Epson Stylus Photo R300 which was not in the list. I downloaded the windows drivers from Epson, let them install, then closed out of the Bonjour wizard and re-ran it (restarted again at step 3 above) and now the R300 was in the list.

I just did a test print and it worked great.

I need a good color laser printer

Postby jason101 » 21. Oct 2008, 03:11

Okay friends, I need a good color laser printer and I need some advice. Everyone tells me that with a laser printer, I save a lot of money on ink catridges, either because the ink catridges are cheap, or because the ink catridges last 10000 times longer than the ink catridges on inkjet printers. But I haven't seen any evidence of this yet. Can anyone offer some assistance please? Thank you so much in advance.
