Freebsd 7 RC1 NAT network issue

Postby remoh » 5. Feb 2008, 13:52

host system is windows xp pro with sp2.
FreeBSD installed successfully, but cannot get network setting via dhcp at booting, invoking command "dhclient pcn0" manually did no help.

I try to configure the pcn0 manually:
ip: 10.0.2.33/24
default gateway: 10.0.2.2

This doesn't work too.

As a try, i installed a debian for comparison.
It worked flawlessly, either via dhcp or configuring manually.

The manual configuration should be this:

Ip address 10.0.2.15
default gateway 10.0.2.2
dns 10.0.2.3

FreeBSD seems to have problems with our network controller emulation. Use
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
VBoxManage modifyvm VM_NAME -nictype1 Am79C970A

and try again.

Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
VBoxManage modifyvm VM_NAME -nictype1 Am79C970A

Isn't working. I've been fighting with this and Googling it since Saturday. Any other ideas?

FreeBSD7.1 crashes with activated nic

Postby huubs » 3. Feb 2009, 19:07

To get FreeBSD7.0 properly working it is important to select the correct netwerkadapter (Am79C970A) BEFORE you install the OS. The nic is then le0.
This works fine here, no need to either run modifyvm or ifconfig.

However, the same procedure doesNOT work with FreeBSD-7.1 . I can startup 7.1 in 'safe mode', or with nic deactivated. But with nic activated the normal startup process crashes after the statement about point to point kickstart.

The host system is linux.

Re: Freebsd 7 RC1 NAT network issue

I got it working by following the above, but I also set it to bridged and let my NAT router assign the IP via DHCP rather than VirtualBox's. I'm using Windows 7 RC1 as the host machine.

It is working awesome now. This is great because we use FreeBSD at work, and this gives us some development space without the cost of some new expensive servers.

It is worth noting I had to change the interface name from em0 to le0 in the rc.conf file before it all came together. This may seem like common sense, but I could see why people might miss this.
