Trying out alternate OS's and this is as alternate as they get. I'm trying to get Plan 9 from Bell Labs running in VB 1.5.0 on Vista x64 host. I get it to boot, and I get it to install, but I can't get the GUI to start. Every mode I try, it tells me it can't find that mode in the vesa bios. I tried the default, 640x480x8, I tried 800x600, 1024x768, 1400x1050, in various color depths and with "setextradata" settings.
Has anyone tried out this OS in VB 1.5.0?

plan 9
Wow, vb is slow running plan9. It took over 24 hours for me to install plan9, and with lots of annoying kernel debug messages all over the place messing up the display. Running in qemu, it looks like it will be done in under an hour, no kernel messages yet.

Bump!
And about speed: With VT-x/AMD-X it's ok, without it it's sloooooooooowww.
Well... On VBox 3.0.2 these resolutions doesn't work for me.ThePhwner wrote:Seems to be working for me, at least booting from the install CD @800x600x16. Granted, its quite sluggish, but functional nonetheless. Vista X64 host, VirtualBox 1.5.6
Edit: This is actually 800x600x8. Also running at 1024x768x8 with no problems.

Re: Plan 9? VGA problem
Unfortunately, I don't have any solution to offer... but I too noticed that Plan 9 was usable in Qemu w/ kqemu- expected speed, and the GUI worked. VBox, it took a long time to boot up, and after seeing mention of a 24 hour install (!), I never attempted it. In VBox I only got textmode rc, no GUI.
