Editing virtual machine notes (description) while powered on

Post by guardian_de »

I wonder why it is not possible to edit the virtual machine notes (description tab) while the machine is powered on. The edit button is disabled.

Is there a good reason not to allow taking notes while the machine is running?

This is something I have often wondered as well. While I am installing software in my VM I like to update the notes to list everything in the VM. Without being able to edit the notes I have been writing them down on paper until I power down the VM, then transfer that into the notes. It would be fantastic to be able to edit the notes while the VM is powered on.

I agree with these posters.

Has anybody thought about it to change this?

I would really like this feature to work with the machines running.

Also, what's the point of having SATA AHCI support if you can't hot swap drives? It would be awesome to allow the settings dialog box to open during operation of the VM. This is one of the few things Microsoft did right with Virtual PC.

yep, anyway even if restarting the guest is required to make changes work it would be awesome to edit any settings during operation

Hi,

I am an active user of Virtual Box on a Fedora 11 (64bit) system. I use it to teach Linux server administration at our university college, to test new packages and servers apart from my own system and to use an occasional Windows application. Before, I compared and used Virtual Box and VMWare. I finally choose for VB.

But I do miss one feature... the one discussed in this thread. I would like to log my notes in the description field during installation, configuration and usage of a guest system.

I really hope this will be implemented in a next version; currently I am using version 3.0.10. It is just a text field. It has nothing to do with a running guest system. So, please, enable the Edit button.

Best regards,
Frank

I've been wanting this feature for a while. I logged in tonight to post this suggestion, but I see I'm not the only person to notice the deficiency.

I like to use the description field to hold notes about changes to the OS and software installed in the guest machine. It would be easier if I could update these notes as changes are made.

If we're taking votes, then this gets my nomination for the next improvement to implement.

Thanks

I've started to use these notes too, because I have several Windows VMs and with the notes, I can easily see what software is installed on it, saving time looking for the correct VM. If software is changed, or you want to add one because you forgot to add it previously, you would have to close the VM now. Really annoying.
