Thanks to Kresh
In the Applications -> Utilities folder there is a program named "Audio Midi Setup". Run this program and select "Built-In Output" in the left pane and select "48000.0 Hz" in the right pane and your Linux sound will play at normal speed.

This did seem to work, at least so far. I also have Soundflower on my Mac so I made sure to set the output for that at 48000.0 Hz as well.

Why did you try it?

oops, I spoke too soon. since some of my Linux distributions come with pulse, they may or may not start at the right bitrate, and some, when I took pulse out were fixed and some not, and none were always fixed. it seems to be a function of the virtualbox loading and then whatever Linux machine you open. as I have mentioned elsewhere, whatever rate I change my Mac to with Audio Midi Setup, VB chnages it to 44.1k. Then after I reset i to 48k, some Linux distributions re-reset it. blah lol

make sure the mini toolbar is on and don't run VB in spaces and see if it helps with the slow sound issue. did for me. snow leopard 10.6.2 & virtualbox 3.0.10
