Windows clients randomly shutdown/reboot

Post by fl-mitchells »

I recently upgraded to Virtualbox 4.0.2 from 3.something and am running the host on Fedora 14. I imported a Win XPsr3 client from my old vbox on Fedora 12. That client suffers from random reboots. I say random-- there is a pattern in that it occurs only after a short period of inactivity. Could be a minute or two, could be 10, but sooner or later it will reboot itself if left alone. I also created a new XP client in vbox 4.0.2 onto which I installed WinXPsr3, then a Win7 upgrade. This client shuts down randomly... well random in the same sense as the first. So... XP reboots and 7 shuts down, each without provocation. Any ideas why this may be happening?

*edit--- sorry forgot to mention my host OS is 64bit, both guests are 32bit if this makes any difference.

Turn off screen savers and power management features in the guest.
Fix for this is supposed to be included in the next maintenance release.

I was noticing this lately but was not paying much attention until I lost so of my work. I will try the work-around.

Seeing this issue running 4.0.2r69518 on Ubuntu 10.10 n l under 2.6.35-25-generic x86_64 GNU/Linux with guest Windows 7. Seeing shutdowns not reboots though, VBox logs don't show alot:

Read something about the client additions for this version causing the guest (win7 32bit in this case) to set power scheme to balanced. Could not even get into the control panel on the guest OS so went for the following:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\rorx>powercfg -list
