karmic / linux mint 8 rc, 3.0.10 > 3.0.12 update not showing

Post by walterav »

Hi,

I installed virtualbox 3.0.8 succesfully with addiing the ppa's in ubuntu 9.10. When 3.0.10 came out I was surprised it updated and installed itself it went fine.
But right now when 3.0.12 is out, virtualbox is reporting it is already the latest release in linux mint 8 rc? Is is linux mint 8 rc, or is there something wrong with the ppa's?

info:
i386 version

Sun does not provide a PPA for VirtualBox, they have their own repository. Please check the download page. If you install VB from a PPA, you're installing the OSE version.

This is the ppa I added, maybe ppa is the wrong name for the sun repository?:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian karmic non-free # added this to /etc/apt/sources.list
wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... n_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - #installed this key

Shows fine as option on my system, but as I installed the beta of 3.1.0, I won't get it as update.

Xubuntu 9.10 x86_64. But that doesn't change the apt headers.

Today, virtualbox shows that there is update to 3.0.12 and it offers a link to download the *.deb file, but with sudo apt-get upgrade it doesn't show the package...

I'll try a fresh install when linuxmint 8 gets released...

Did you actually run sudo apt-get update first?

Yep, I also tried first: sudo apt-get update

I also played with the checkbox in virtualbox to disable "automatic updates", I rather keep it disabled because I don't want the annoying popup message to appear. Only to silently upgrade when I manually: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

And you're also sure that you're running the PUEL version, instead of the OSE one?

I'm able to use usb, does that mean that I'm not running OSE?

If you have USB, then you should indeed be running the PUEL version, not the OSE.

Testing with linux mint 8, and it still installs virtualbox 3.0.10.

steps I took:
Install linux mint 8
Add the following to /etc/apt/sources.lst:
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian karmic non-free

Added this key:
wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... n_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-3.0

After install I start virtualbox and it gives a popup about 3.0.12 being availble and I can manually download it from the website.
The version reports 3.0.10 R54097

Well, it really is your system that is at fault here. Both http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 4/Packages and http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 6/Packages show that 2.0.12 and 3.0.12 are the versions in the repo. There should be no way you get 3.0.10, unless it's rerouted through Mint and they decide to give you 3.0.10 instead.
