"VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908) VB2.1.2 Ubuntu
I just ran the regular system update in Ubuntu 8.10 which required a restart. I didn't restart at the time because I had a few things running, one of which was VirtualBox 2.1.2 with XP host. No problems were encountered until I restarted the system. Now I am getting the VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908) message. I have attempted to run etc/init.d/vobxdrv setup as indicated but terminal is returning errors. Perhaps this is due to my inexperience.
Can anyone help with this issue?

"It's returning errors." Which errors? Segmentation Faults, missing files, script error on line x?
Did you read the error and do what it said?

Yes. As stated above, the error is "VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908)". running etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup is not working.
Help would be appreciated.

To all those who need a REAL solution...I figured it out myself.
If you happen to get the SAME ERROR THAT I HAVE LISTED TWICE ALREADY...."VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED".....do the following:
1) uninstall VirtualBox 2.1.2 in synaptic (leave your virtual hard drives, they are unaffected)
2) reinstall VirtualBox 2.1.2 in synaptic.
3) reboot.
4) i had to manually remove and then re-add Sun xmVirtualBox in my right-click Edit Menus to get it back into Applications=>System Tools=> Sun xM VirtualBox
Enjoy.
I hope this is helpful for all of those out there who could do without the smart-ass responses from the so called "experts"

If you don't give proper answers to our questions, how do you think we can help you? Stefan already provided the command to fix it. Reinstalling VB essentially does the same, but is a lot more work than just executing one command as root.

Why do you not post the errors given by the commands? Then we could help. But without these infos help is impossible.
Your only infos is: " ... but terminal is returning errors ... "
Which errors? Try to solve the problem, not to reinstall.

I'm not surprised you got an error if you typed that; it should be '/etc/init.d/vobxdrv setup'; actually since you are running Ubuntu, it should be 'sudo /etc/init.d/vobxdrv setup'bikodog wrote:...I have attempted to run etc/init.d/vobxdrv setup as indicated but terminal is returning errors. Hi
I'm on Fedora 10 and when I try the command
[root@marcoR-IT init.d]# /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel module [ OK ]
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module [FALLÓ]
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
In the vbox-install.log:
Makefile:143: *** Error: unable to find the sources of your current Linux kernel. Specify KERN_DIR=<directory> and run Make again. Alto.
???
Sorry, I have not so much experience...
I think this version is more aimed to Fedora 9 than to Fedora 10?
what should I do?

Re: "VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908) VB2.1.2 Ubuntu
I'm experiencing a similar problem and wasn't sure if it fell under this category or not. I am having some problems getting it to start. Here's the pertinent info:
VirtualBox 2.1
Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 (uname -r output 2.6.27-11-generic)
In case it's pertinent, my system setup is a little goofy:
I moved my /boot partition to a hidden partition on a flash drive and installed grub to the flash drive. There is no MBR on my laptop hdd (I shredded it). Both / and /home are encrypted (256 aes) and so is my swap (/dev/urandom creates key on boot, 256 aes). Yes the flash drive is connected when I try all this stuff and /boot is mounted properly during all this.
Every time I try to start vbox I get the kernel error. (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (rc=-1908)). So I tried /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup:
Here's the output:
16:31 root@Darkstar #/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
* Stopping VirtualBox kernel module * done.
* Removing old VirtualBox netflt kernel module * done.
* Removing old VirtualBox kernel module * done.
* Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module * done.
* Starting VirtualBox kernel module
* modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why
The funny thing was it didn't contain a single line pertaining to vbox! I tried looking up the log (/var/log/vbox-install.log) and here it is:

As you can see I tried this several times after tinkering with different things. I also tried apt-get purge virtualbox* then re-install. I have tried ose from the repo's, and the binary download from the vbox site for both the ose and standard. Everything I have tried has given me the same result.
It looks like the module is compiling correctly, however, it's unable to start. I tried rebooting after the install and got an error during boot (modprobe vboxdrv failed check dmesg, etc.) I had this working once before on the same system before I moved my /boot and encrypted everything. (I did a clean install on top of an encrypted partition rather than just encrypt the files) The only difference is the device name where everything is mounted (home mounts at /dev/mapper/home, same with root) and /boot is on /dev/sdb2 instead of /dev/sda1. Could it be that vbox just wont run on an encrypted system???
