You need to either change back to alsa as I have done or you can seek help via Ubuntu. I could not get it to work properly using pulse audio. (In my case anyway) On host or guest.

Today I changed the driver to pulseaudio in virtual box settings, and it worked fine.. but thanks for pointing in the right direction.

I have tried following:

Deacative Sound, USB, Network on VirtualBox: No effects
Activate Sound: VirtualBox ist slower than before. Sounds terrible stutters. Click in Startmenü under Windows takes 5sec
Deactivate Sound on Ubuntu (no driver loaded): No effects
Deactivate Compiz: Little bit faster
Changing RAM-Size: No effects
Changing VideoRAM-Size: No effects
Deactivate Shared-Folder: No effects
Deactivate VT/x: Slower
Enable/Disable 3D: No effects
Changing to rt-kernel: VirtualBox craches

All things i have tried, did not make any effects. VirtualBox is always very slow on Ubuntu 9.10.
Same Configuration under Ubuntu 9.04 and VirtualBox 3.0.8: No problem. Guest is fast.

I have downgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) 32bit and have installed VirtualBox 9.10. Now this works normal.

I also have experienced very slow response of my XP guest in Virtualbox 3.0.8 OSE on Kubuntu 9.10. I have tried several things mentioned in the forum without noticing any improvements.
But your tip really helped, thanks! After switching the VirtualMachine Audio from ALSA to Pulseaudio or switching audio off, the performance improved considerably.
It is still not as fast as on my previous configuration, Kubuntu 8.04 LTS + Virtualbox 2.1.0 but I am optimistic now.

For those of you experiencing performance degredation after upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit host OS? I'm considering upgrading, but rely on VirtualBox with WinXP for MS Exchange access and a few development tools - and the observations around performance have me worried.

Thanks!

I reverted back to Ubuntu 9.04 x64 to solve my problems. Running VirtualBox 3.0.10 PUEL.
I could not get it to work properly otherwise.

I have no problem running Vbox 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 9.10 (which was an upgrade from 9.04). Refrained from upgrading to 3.0.10 because of this thread.
Did switch VM to pulseaudio, which fixed my audio issues.
I do run my VM in single CPU mode with VTx and nested pages enabled.
Besides audio, didn't have any issues. in fact, I think it's consuming less CPU now (and I have audio (ogg radio) running inside VM all the time)

my kernel:
2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
my HW:

I could actually get better performance using (1) cpu in 9.10 as well. But in 9.04 I can use both and it does improve the speed. It didn't matter if VBox was 3.0.8 or 3.0.10 for me.

It seems like this issue might be tied-to the 64-bit kernel/distro in Ubuntu 9.10 (2.6.31-nn-generic x86_64). Are there any confirmed cases of this slow-down on the 32-bit kernel/distro?

After last update of ubuntu 9.10 my virtual box slows down.

After
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
everything works fine and virtual box is as fast as before the update. Thanks for the help.

I tried running /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but the lag issue remains.

This is the log info I get now:

I have no problem running Vbox 3.0.8 on Ubuntu 9.10 (which was an upgrade from 9.04).

Where can I download Virtualbox 3.0.8 please?

Ubuntu 9.10 32bits here, 2 hours that I'm installing XP, lags to death (copying files was very slow, and now the localization config screen hangs, sometimes randomly coming back to life).
Same problem with Windows 2000 already installed, sometimes works flawlessly, but each time I change some settings in VB (for example adding/removing a soundcard, enabling/disabling VT-x etc...) it take several reboot for the machine to work again normally, i.e without hanging randomly, using one proc 100%.
