Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
A workaround until this bug gets fixed:
In gnome, add a new system monitor applet to a panel, and in its preferences, change its update interval to the minimum 50 milliseconds. This will force frequent xdamage notifications and alleviate the issue to some degree. Optionally, set that system monitor's width to the minimum 10 pixels to minimize CPU usage and change the monitored resource from processor to memory or swap space to prevent any visual distraction.

Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
Thanks for the interesting trick. It certainly makes this bug somewhat less annoying. It doesn't fix the stability issues though, which are significant in my experience. I implemented this workaround, quit the virtual machine and saved its state, restored it and had a black screen with no action. Had to power down the virtual machine to recover. I don't get these kinds of problems running without 3D on.
3D is just not working.
Thanks for the tip though.

Hi,
Just wanted to report in that I have the same problem and that hopefully there will be a fix for this in one of the upcoming versions.

I have the same problem.
Running VirtualBox 3.0.10, Windows 7 host and Ubuntu 9.10 guest.
Is there any fix yet?

I can confirm this bug seems to be fixed in 3.1.0 BETA2
Running Win7 64bit host + Ubuntu 9.10 64bit with 3D support ON, and no lagging effects!!
Yay, thanks to whoever fixed it.

Upgrade should replace current modules. You do need to reboot the Guest OS, else it's still using the old version of the module (loaded in memory).lucaat wrote:Still lags here...

Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
Hmm. Strange. Now I did notice lag to some degree on my new laptop with this beta that I didn't have before, but it's possible that the issue is due to the Host and it's video card. Will check later on my PC for this.

Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
I have tried this on a new install of Ubuntu, and fresh install of the additions, I still have the problem. Far as I am concerned this is not fixed, but maybe there is something specific to my system....

Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
I just ran my VM on the PC and there is a certain lag to fade out the effects, but as discussed here, that the actual menu or other things stay behind as a 'ghost' is something I don't see. All I see is the fade out time taking longer. Same as on my laptop. PC has an nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX, laptop has an Intel GMA4500MHD.

Re: 3D effects lag in Ubuntu 9.04 guest
The original final frame update or lag issue can best be seen in a console window. Typing in a console window in KDE, XFCE or GNOME would typically result in the keyboard character lagging about one second. This issue was present from 3.0.0 through 3.1 BETA2
VirtualBox 3.1 BETA 3 seems to have resolved this issue for myself as well as others. Please feel free to test and provide feedback. Remember that BETA3 is a pre-release build and should not be used on a production machine. See bug 4653 for details.
