vboxvideo (Seamless Mode & Auto-resize) not working in KDE

Post by samwise »

VirtualBox: 2.1.4
Host: Windows XP Pro SP2 (32-bit)
Guest: Debian Squeeze AMD64 (incl. DKMS 2.0.20.4 and VirtualBox Guest Additions)

Hi,

I've installed the latest version of VirtualBox as above, without any noticeable problems. 3D Acceleration is disabled within the VM's Settings. The Guest Additions appear to have installed correctly, and I have configured a shared folder.

However, I can't seem to use Seamless Mode - it is greyed out in the VirtualBox GUI and Host+L is ignored. Included below is my X.org configuration and the log files from X.org and the installation of the VirtualBox Guest Additions. After reading through other threads in this forum, I tried explicitly specifying the Device Driver as "vboxvideo" in xorg.conf, but it made no difference.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Sam.

Re: Seamless Mode not working

Post by Sasquatch »

Are the GA from the ISO itself, or from the Debian Repository? I'm guessing the ISO. Your xorg seems to pick up the driver just fine. Do you have dynamic resizing available (so the resolution changes as you change the window size)? If you don't have that, seamless won't work either. Did you check the manual to see if your xserver version is compatible with seamless? If I read the log properly, you have version 1.4.2 of xserver. It might be better to update to 1.5 or newer.

Re: Seamless Mode not working

Post by samwise »

The Guest Additions are from the ISO, yes. And X.org is indeed version 1.4.2, which according to the manual is significantly higher than the required version, 1.3.

I have the option to enable Auto-resize Guest Display (unlike the Seamless Mode option, which is greyed out) but selecting it appears to do nothing - when I increase the size of the window, or maximise it, the resolution remains the same (800x600) and the rest of the now-bigger window is just filled with a default grey background. I also can't increase the resolution any higher than 800x600 from within the KDE Control Center.

I'm pretty sure I meet all the requirements and I've done everything according to the manual but there just doesn't appear to be any indication of why it's not working.

There is this one warning in the X.org log, but I'm not convinced it's related ...

Code: Select all

(WW) VBoxVideo(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xe0800000,0x400000)
(WW) VBoxVideo(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xe0000000,0xc00000)
I'd really rather not upgrade X.org without some suggestion that it's going to work - maintaining a version of X.org that's not from my distro's repositiories sounds like a lot of work. My version really isn't that old and it easily matches the requirement ... :/

Sam.

Re: Seamless Mode not working

Post by Sasquatch »

Ok, you are sure your posted xorg.conf is the same as you are using, meaning there is no resolution noted there? Since 2.1.4, automatic resizing is disabled if a resolution is in the xorg.conf file. Please copy the xorg.conf from my howto GA to your VM and see how that goes.

Re: Seamless Mode not working

Post by samwise »

Thanks for the suggestions, Sasquatch.

I'm absolutely sure that the xorg.conf in my first post is the one in use and has no resolutions specified. It's the default file supplied with the distribution, slightly modified by the VirtualBox Guest Additions installer.

Using the Ubuntu xorg.conf config supplied in your Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions post, makes no difference - resultant Xorg.0.log is included below. As I stated in my first post, specifying the device driver as "vboxvideo" is ineffective - it appears from the X.org log that the driver is being successfully detected and loaded anyway, even if that setting is omitted.

Judging from the X.org log output everything appears to load fine - it's just not working. Has anyone got this working on a 64-bit Linux guest OS? Also, does anyone else get the warning in the X.org log I mentioned earlier? If so, are you still able to use Seamless Mode, Auto-resize Guest Display or increase the resolution to more than 800x600?

A frustrated Sam.

Edit: If I specify a higher resolution in the Screen section of xorg.conf, as below, the VM starts in that resolution. I'm still completely unable to make use of either Seamless Mode or Auto-resize Guest Display. I'm beginning to suspect this is a problem with the vboxvideo driver.

Code: Select all

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Default Screen"
        Device "VirtualBox graphics card"
        Monitor "Configured Monitor"
        DefaultDepth 24
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Re: vboxvideo (Seamless Mode & Auto-resize) not working in KDE

Post by samwise »

Solution identified after reading snake's post in the Resolutions higher than 1200x768 aren't possible Deb SID topic. The VBoxClient application was not being run in KDE on login, so I added a script to call it in ~/.kde/Autostart.

Original topic renamed to better reflect problem description. I've re-opened Ticket #1699 (VBoxClient does not start automatically on some Linux guests (1.6.2 regression)) in the bug tracker as this seems to be a recurrence of the same issue.

Sam.
