Shared Folder not accessible in Mac image for me

Post by invinceable »

Hi guys,
I've configured a shared folder in the VirtualBox settings for my Mac OS X image - pointing to a folder in my Windows 7 Host, but when I load the image and click on the shared-folder icon on the Mac desktop, it just says that the alias is invalid. I'm new to Macs, so am i doing something silly or not understanding something in particular? Or does the 'shared folders' feature of VirtualBox not apply to Guest Macs?

(Just to confirm, I'm able to load a Windows XP Guest which can successfully access that shared folder with no problems.. so its not a corrupt folder or anything like that)

Shared folders does not (yet) exist for mac guests. That will come when they have guest additions for mac.

My way: "You live as long as you learn".

Actually, you can share host shared folders with the guest:

1) Share a folder from the actual host machine (from the OS, not through the vbox shared folders)
2) Use NAT for your guest's network settings
3) From Mac OS X, Open "Finder" (looks like a square face, usually on the bottom-left)
4) From the top menu, navigate to Go->Connect to Server
5) For "Server Address" enter smb://10.0.2.2
6) Click "Connect"
7) Enter your username and password (for the host machine)
8) Select the shared folder from the list

I just did this on my Mac Pro without any problems (Ubuntu Lucid 64-bit host, VirtualBox 3.2, Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 Server guest). I assume the same process would work for other hosts as well. If you are not using NAT for your guest network settings, you'll have to figure out the correct address to use instead of 10.0.2.2 (I haven't tried this yet).

 Just thought i'd let people know, you don't need to be using NAT for file sharing to work, but you will need to be connected to a network to use it if not using NAT.

If not using NAT: File sharing works exactly like you were using two separate machines on the same local network and you'd point your guest to your host's LAN ip, also this works in the other direction since the guest will have it's own LAN ip on your network and can share to your host as well as connect with any other computers on the network.

Is there a way to make these persistent? If you connect to a share, then shut down the virtual machine, the shares are not there the next time you fire it up?

1) You replied to a 4 year old thread. Not a good idea ;)
2) This is not a VirtualBox issue, it is a Mac sharing issue.
3) You can create an alias to the network share on your desktop or the dock and have it readily available.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hi,

Since this thread has been 're-enlivened' I hope it's OK to continue.
I followed these steps but did not succeed to access any shared folders on my PC (Win 7, 64bit)

When I enter the password I get this:
2014-10-08_163146.png
2014-10-08_163146.png (18.02 KiB) Viewed 228286 times

then this message come up:
2014-10-08_163221.png
2014-10-08_163221.png (25.96 KiB) Viewed 228286 times

and then it goes back to this:
2014-10-08_163243.png
2014-10-08_163243.png (20.53 KiB) Viewed 228286 times

What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

There seems to be a much easier way.
  • Pick a folder on the Host machine that you wish to share. Get Info in the Finder. Click Shared Folder.
  • Ensure that Bridged Adapter is enabled in the Network tab in the VirtualBox Settings for your VM. This assumes you're on a LAN of some sort; I'm on an Airport network.
  • Launch the VM. In the sidebar of Finder windows should be your host computer name. Click on it.
  • Your previously chosen shared folder should be in the list. Double-click on it.
  • The shared folder should now be mounted as a network drive on the desktop. Go to Login Items under Accounts (or Users and Groups) in System Preferences, click the Plus button and choose the network drive.
  • That shared folder should now mount whenever you log in to your account on the OS X VM.
Well, maybe that's not so easy. It is at least another way.
The only problem with this approach is that I'm fairly sure that it goes over your network instead of being a direct connection, so speed could be an issue.
