Guest Additions Service Crash in Windows 7 64bit Guest

Post by boco »

VBox Version: PUEL 3.1.2
Host: Windows Vista SP2 32bit
Guest: Windows 7 64bit
VT-x/AMD-V: Enabled
Nested Paging: Disabled

Folgendes Problem tritt im Zusammenhang mit den Guest-Additions von 3.1.2 auf: Unter einem Windows 7 32bit Guest funktioniert alles problemlos, aber unter Windows 7 64bit crasht der VBox Guest Additions Service.

Event ID 1000

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: VBoxService.exe, version: 3.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x4b2a30bb
Faulting module name: VBoxService.exe, version: 3.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x4b2a30bb
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000000c53b
Faulting process id: 0x2a0
Faulting application start time: 0x01ca85d5d8c3508c
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\VBoxService.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\VBoxService.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

VBox Version: PUEL 3.1.2
Host: Windows Vista SP2 32bit
Guest: Windows 7 64bit
VT-x/AMD-V: Enabled
Nested Paging: Disabled

Following problem occurs with the version 3.1.2 guest additions: In a Windows 7 32 bit guest, everything works fine, but in a 64bit Win7 guest the VBox guest additions service crashes.

Event ID 1000

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: VBoxService.exe, version: 3.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x4b2a30bb
Faulting module name: VBoxService.exe, version: 3.1.2.0, time stamp: 0x4b2a30bb
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x000000000000c53b
Faulting process id: 0x2a0
Faulting application start time: 0x01ca85d5d8c3508c
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\system32\VBoxService.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\VBoxService.exe
The previously installed guest additions (from 3.0.10) worked without problems, even under VBox 3.1.2.

Note: After a downgrade to the guest additions of version 3.0.12, the service works again. I can't say anything about 3.1.0 GA, however, as I skipped that version.

Does relly no one experience this, too? Do I need to provide more info?

I do not see this problem. If this is re-creatable you should post this in the bugtracker (link is below my post)
Be sure to provide as much information as possible and do not forget to post (as an attachment) your VBox log file for the client.

Yes, I can recreate it with every 64bit guest so far. I'll wait for 3.1.4, and, if the problem remains, will make an entry.
Be sure to provide as much information as possible and do not forget to post (as an attachment) your VBox log file for the client.
While I could do that, the VBox log file does not show anything at all. Only the VBoxService.exe of the 3.1.2 GA crashes, nothing more. The host and guest experience no further issues, other than the service-specific GA features not working, e. g. time sync.

The real problem could be that you're not alerted, the VBoxService.exe fails silently.

I understand, but you must also understand. They are really fussy about the log file. If it is not included they will not work the ticket.

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know that I presently am having the same issues with 3.1.2. installed under Win7 64 and running Win2008R2-64 guests....

In case it could help you resolve the root cause, my guess OS complains about the NIC drivers not being signed for MS Win installation.
This poped up secretly in the guess Win events logs after I had cloned a Vbox disk image and tryied to use it again. ( Vbox disk clone+ MS Win sysprep )

I could never re-enable the full NIC drivers after that.

Re-installed a fresh new Guess OS, everything works fine, installed Vbox additions, then these crash again.

Could it be possible to sign those Vbox virtual NIC drivers for them to be accepted by Windows as thru signed 64 drivers ?

Thanks , hope this helps !

I can confirm this as well. Windows 7-64 host, Windows Server 2008 R2-64 and Windows Server 2003 R2-64 guests. I only run 64-bit. VBoxService.exe tanks on startup on all my guests. I can also confirm that Virtual Box Additions 3.1.0 does work, at least in my environment. I have a log file handy, and I've opened a ticket (#5963) as mentioned above.

I too can confirm that installing the additions in W7 64 bit guest OS on a W7 64bit host under the latest VirtualBox 3.1.2r56127, immediately falls over.

Re: Guest Additions Service Crash in Windows 7 64bit Guest

I had the same problem and I've managed to keep VBoxService alive by adding the --disable-exec command line switch.

Steps required:

- start regedit
- navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VBoxService
- add "--disable-exec" to the "ImagePath" key, so it looks like

c:\windows\system32\VBoxService --disable-exec

- restart the service (or the whole box)

This seems to disable some functionality whereby some API running on the host can invoke processes on the guest, but I don't use it. I think the fact that VBoxService.exe resides in system32 might be an indication as to why some process-spawning functionality doesn't work on x64 systems...
