I have an older (4-5 yrs old) Toshiba laptop, Satellite M55-S135 (I can't believe VMs even run on this thing). I don't know much about the hardware like the mobo, but it definitely has a mix of USB 1 and 2. I've only ever gotten 1 of the 4 ports to work a USB2. That's what I was using when it first connected. I just tried it on one of the USB 1 ports and it also worked. I also just tried checking & unchecking the USB2 option box in the VM settings; it worked both ways.
Oh, btw, I'm using whatever the latest Vbox version is, 2.2.2. Ubuntu 8.10 host, WinXP guest, and the newest version of itunes. My nano is . . . 2nd gen? (it's the tall narrow one, a few years old, was only available in wht & black, and has the squared off sides)
*** I'm just winging it here, but I found this to be odd, and repeatable. When the windows/itunes/ipod link is working, I run the itunes diagnostics and it finds the ipod - sound great, right? But then, following the diagnostic, the connection no longer functions. If I again run itunes diagnostic - and it doesn't see the ipod - the next attempt to disable/enable the VM usb connection, it works again. I've repeated the sequence twice and it's done the same thing each time. It's like the itunes diagnostic flips a switch somewhere.
If my hardware/software is anything like yours, I'd be happy to do any experimenting if you think it would provide you with additional info.
