This is only with this beta, or does it happen on other versions too?

The Copy Paste, can made the VirtualBox software not responding. = I have also reported that some month(s) ago, ...

At my side, it do that on "v3.0.0 and up > ", it have that also in the beta of, VirtualBox 3.1.0 Beta 1.

---> The most time it do that, is when i edit a "Description", inside configuration of a virtual machine, inside VirtualBox.

---> It really do that on a paste command, from the mouse button and with the keyboard ctrl-v, option.

It has happened for me too, with previous versions and in the latest beta (I should have mentioned it before, but it slipped my mind) - though in my case I was copying the MAC address from one VM to another.

To reproduce the fault, go to the MAC address field of one VM, select all the characters in the field and press "^C" to copy it to the clipboard. Now go to the MAC address field of a different VM, again select all the existing characters in the field, then press "^V" with the intention of replacing the selected characters with the clipboard contents. Instant lock-up, you will have to use task manager to terminate the VirtualBox process. There is no lockup if you delete all the existing chars one at a time using backspace, then press ^V.

This is on an XP host btw, VBox PUEL.

That doesn't lock up VB on Linux though. Does it happen all the time with that?

I just tried this on Vista host and on a Ubuntu host. No lockup.
But I really think there is something torked with the bidirectional clipboard. Mine stops working after a while and I need to reboot the host to get it to work right. It might last an hour or a day if I don't use it a lot, but this has been happening to me since 3.0.8

I just tried this again with beta 2, I used exactly the same procedure as before (XP SP2 host). However this time there was no lockup. Was this fixed, or was I just lucky this time?

I also experience such issues from time-to-time. But occasionally. No VM stuck here; it is just GUI (qt?) issue.

Host: Windows 7, x64, Core 2 Q6600, VBox 3.1.0-BETA2.

It happens to me when I create a new VM and paste in the name of the VHD. Also when creating snapshot descriptions and pasting in text. Pretty much anywhere

When VB falls over it also wipes the clipboard too.

biderectional copy/paste never really worked for me... when running VB my CTRL and windows key sometimes loose their functionality altogether. This is seriously annoying since I use VirtuaWin... I mean you are working on more than one OS, you need more than one desktop on the host!

Re: Crash - Copy Paste

Post by Technologov »

I have found a way to reproduce this on Windows 7/x64 host with VBox 3.1.0.
This ugly bug (Qt?) results in crash of VBox GUI and corrupts clipboard in Windows host.

Steps to reproduce: (sometimes reproducible)
1. Create a new VM named "Fedora07 32-bit SMP" (type from keyboard; something long with spaces)
2. Copy it (VM settings->General->Name field->select->ctrl+C)
3. Create a new VM named "Fedora07 32-bit SMP" (paste it, Ctrl+V)

VBox GUI will freeze, when trying to press "X", it will Crash.

NOTE: The problem begins with Copy --- if you paste it to Windows Notepad (after step 2), nothing will be pasted.
Basically it zeroes Windows Host Clipboard.
But if the source is text copied from Windows Notepad, then step 3 will succeed.
It seems that Qt crashes when zero-size clipboard string is pasted into it.

This is basically 2 bugs:
1. Copy results in zero-size clipboard string
2. Paste of zero-size clipboard string results in VBox GUI crash.

Bug #1 was not reproducible on RHEL 5/x64 host. So I can't test Bug #2.
Is there a way to artificially create zero-size clipboard strings on other host platforms?

[Crash - Copy Paste] = I test, and it's not fixed, VirtualBox 3.1.4 Beta 1.

Also, when editing a description, if i click on the secondary mouse button, and select "copy or paste", it make the "not responding problem".

I reported this problem 7 months ago as bug ticket #4491, including a scenario to reproduce it.
Two months ago someone else filed the same problem as bug ticket #5218.
