clonehd -format RAW

With the command in the Subject, I can create a clone hard disk in format RAW from a static VDI, but I cannot create one from a dynamic VDI.
Is this a fault or by design?
I read the VDI tutorial, but have not the basic knowledge to give myself an answer to this fact.
